In the Oceania of George Orwell's 1984, there are three distinct social classes. At the bottom, making up the vast majority of the population, are the Proles. They live a life of beer, cheap thrills, and hard manual labor. In short, they are far away from being political beings. In the middle is the much smaller Outer Party. Privy to many of the details of the society, they are nonetheless monitored for any sort of dissent. Finally, at the top of the Oceania social system are the 2-3 percent of people who make up the Inner Party.
