Did you know for a while there were two mainline track gauges used in Britain? 4ft 8 1/2 known as standard gauge and 7ft broad gauge used on the Great Western Railway until as late as 1890. Unfortunately one of the UK's least known exports was standard gauge which is a dominant gauge size despite the increase loading gauge offered by using a 7ft track.
