Bloody Mary: The Legendary Horror Phantom
Bloody Mary is one of the most widely spread urban legends in the West, depicted as a hideous, resentful ghost bound to eerie summoning rituals and deadly curses, becoming a nightmare symbol for countless people.
There are several versions of her origin. One of the most common claims her prototype is Queen Mary I of England in the 16th century. Nicknamed "Bloody Mary" for cruelly persecuting Protestants and ordering the burning of hundreds of dissenters, she is said to have turned into an evil spirit filled with resentment after death. Another version stems from a folk tragedy: a beautiful woman was disfigured by accident or murder, committed suicide in despair, and her soul lingered on earth due to obsession, becoming a ghost that takes revenge on the living. Yet another story says she was a betrayed bride, brutally killed on her wedding night, and later began claiming lives in a bloody form.
The ritual to summon Bloody Mary is simple yet eerie, with various variations worldwide. The classic method is: at midnight, walk alone into a closed bathroom, turn off the lights, light a candle, and say "Bloody Mary" three times in a row while looking in the mirror. Legend has it that her figure will gradually appear in the mirror—either a pale woman with hollow eyes or a bloodied, rotting monster.
The summoned Bloody Mary is extremely terrifying. She will climb out of the mirror, tear the summoner’s face with her claws, or curse them to meet misfortune soon, such as bizarre injuries, mental breakdowns, or even death. Some say she will steal the summoner’s soul or drag them into the dark world behind the mirror.
This legend has endured for centuries, rooted in the horrific deeds of historical figures and humanity’s fear of the unknown, darkness, and the afterlife. It is often used as material for horror stories, appearing in movies, novels, and games, which continuously strengthen its eerie and terrifying image. To this day, curious people still attempt the ritual, but no one has proven its authenticity—yet rumors of the bloody figure in the mirror and bizarre misfortunes have always made "Bloody Mary" one of the most chilling names in Western horror legends.
