Why does the British military have an almost mythical reputation?
Because of a peculiarity of the British psyche, which the British themselves usually do not fully realise.

The thought “I have lost” can not physically fit into a British brain.

Go look at a football pitch. If they are 3 goals down with two minutes to go, the best you can hope for as the winning team is something like a tactical retreat: they do realise that it might, at this stage, not be much point in risking an injury, since there’s a new game next Saturday. But they will never, ever, hang their heads and let you score another two quick ones; they are much more likely to just keep attacking until the end.
Same with British soldiers. You overrun their unit and stomp them into the ground; they’ll retreat, re-group, and attack again. And again. And again. Occupy their entire country, and you will have to keep occupying it, because it is not possible to pacify it; they might stage a tactical retreat, but they will never call it a day. Capture them and put them in camps; they’ll spend all their time trying to escape. Rain V2 rockets on their cities and expect them to be terrorised; they’ll all board a fishing trawler, cross the Channel, and beat you to death with their brollies.
They simply don’t know when they’ve been beaten. And since they don’t, they haven’t.
When you are fighting them, you actually can bargain with them, you can reason with them, they will even respect you if you fight honourably, but they don’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and they absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.
