A frog and a scorpion were sitting on the shore of a pond. As they talked, it became clear that they both wanted to get to the other side. Since the scorpion was unable to swim, he asked the frog if he could jump on the frog's back as the frog swam to the other side of the pond.
"Absolutely not!" replied the frog. "If I let you sit on my back, you'll sting me for sure."
"Why would I do something as stupid as that?" asked the scorpion. "If I sting you while we're out on the pond, we'll both drown."
That made good sense to the frog, so he told the scorpion to jump on. Together, they started across the pond. When they were about half way, the scorpion stuck his stinger deep into the frog's back and injected his poison into the frog. As the frog began to lose his ability to swim, he asked the scorpion, "Why did you sting me? Now we're both going to die."
The scorpion replied, just before his head sank beneath the surface, "I couldn't help it. It's my nature."
